Vibrational Communication

I am interested in communication signals that are transmitted via the substrate – a communication mode that is widespread among animals and is even used by plants. Especially arthropods have been shown to use vibratory signals for various reasons such as mate localization, species and sex recognition, predator and prey detection, and social interactions. Despite the extensive use of vibrational signals by animals, research on this topic is still underrepresented and many aspects of this communication mode remain unexplored.
By using Mantophasmatodea and spiders as model systems, I aim to investigate the evolution of vibrational signals, the selective forces at work that shape such signals, and the role vibratory signals play in speciation. In addition, I will focus on the influence of environmental factors such as temperature on the evolution of vibrational signals.

DFG-Project 533/2-1: Vibrational Communication Signals in Mantophasmatodea: Species Recognition, Sexual Selection, and Population Differentiation

The use of substrate-borne vibrations to signal location, species identity, or sex, is considered a very ancient mode of communication and is extremely widespread within the animal kingdom. The long evolutionary history of this communication modality, the remarkable diversity of species in which it occurs, and its role in biotic interactions provide unparalleled opportunities to ask and answer various general questions concerning species recognition, signal evolution, sexual selection, and the role of communication signals in population differentiation and speciation. The importance of substrate vibrational communication for behavioural and evolutionary biology stands in high contrast to the little research conducted so far on only very few animal taxa.
Only 14 years ago, the insect order Mantophasmatodea (heelwalkers) was discovered and since then, research has focussed mainly on taxonomy and phylogenetic reconstruction. However, the biology of heelwalkers including the role of the vibrational signals they produce has remained widely unexplored. Heelwalkers of both sexes tap their abdomen against the substrate (usually parts of plants) to create substrate vibrations. These vibrational calls probably serve for species identification and mate localization since they were shown to be species and sex specific. Signals are detected by very sensitive leg scolopidial organs which are broadly tuned to the frequency of the communication signals.
Mantophasmatodea therefore represent a perfect model system to investigate the evolution of percussive vibrational signals in a predatory insect and their role in population divergence. In the DFG-funded project, we will investigate the vibrational signals of species that occur in several populations at different localities in the Western Cape Region, a biodiversity hotspot. Behavioural experiments will be conducted to assess the decisive cues within vibrational communication calls, which are used for species recognition. We will explore if character displacement occurs at sites where two or more species occur in sympatry. Female (and male) preferences will be investigated using playback experiments with artificial vibrational signals to reveal the influence of sexual selection on vibrational signal evolution. Field studies will allow for optimized seminatural laboratory setups. Finally, variability of vibrational calls, variability of somatic and genitalic morphological characters as well as genetic diversity using microsatellite markers will be investigated in populations of the same species to reveal the present state of population differentiation of Mantophasmatodea in the Western Cape. This will provide insight into the role vibrational communication might play for population differentiation and speciation in Mantophasmatodea.

Neuronal processing of acoustic communication signals in grasshoppers: the role of temperature

In ectothermic animals, temperature shifts influence basic properties of nerve cells such as spike rate, conduction velocity, and spike amplitude. Changing temperatures particularly affect acoustic communication systems where decoding of temporal characteristics of conspecific calls is required for species and mate recognition.

In grasshoppers, processing of auditory input starts within the metathoracic ganglion, where the first steps of song pattern recognition and analysis of sound direction are accomplished. Altogether, three processing stages are located here: receptor neurons, local (segmental) interneurons, and ascending interneurons. Together they constitute a hierarchically organized feed-forward network. Using intracellular recordings from locust auditory receptors, local and ascending interneurons, in combination with modelling techniques, we aimed to reveal the effects of changing temperatures on these neurons and the processing of acoustic stimuli. This is a further step in understanding the remarkable robustness of the system against disturbances like temperature shifts.

Study Interest

The question how permanent social communities with communal brood care could have evolved is a central topic of evolutionary biology. Particularly fascinating is the fact that in carnivorous and cannibalistic animals, like spiders, social group living evolved. The examination of the basic ethological, physiological and morphological requirements and mechanisms for the evolution of sociality in spiders is the main topic of my PhD. I will examine a subsocial and a social species of the genus Stegodyphus in which females feed their young via regurgitation and get eaten by them at the end of the maternal care process (matriphagy). The subsocial species S. lineatus lives a solitary life except for the brood care period. In contrast, the social species S. dumicola lives in large social groups with related individuals where not only the biological mothers perform maternal care but also aunts (allo-mothers). In my studies I use histological and behavioural approaches to show what triggers regurgitation and matriphagy and if these processes are strictly channeled or reversible. Additionally I want to clarify which factors determine if a female becomes a mother or an allo-mother. My work will therefore contribute to the understanding of the fundamental aspects of the evolution of sociality.

Research interests

Doctoral thesis

Up to now, I have been mainly interested in animal sexual behaviours involving several focuses along my different projects ranging from mate choice to sexual conflict including sperm allocation strategy and male competitive selfish behaviour. As a red thread, I am interested in individual behaviours facing each others and the effect on the mating system or on the population dynamic (and the feedback). And I like to combine both empirical and theoretical approaches for this purpose.
In my PhD project, I focus on a male reproductive strategy involved in postcopulatory competition in the spider species Larinia jeskovi. This male reproductive behaviour involves a harmful process for the female which could be a clue that a conflict occurs between the sexes. The aim of the project is to investigate the relationship between the sexes in order to elucidate the nature of the coevolution. In this prospect, I mix fieldwork (Biebrza National Park in Poland & Balaton lake in Hungary), lab experiments and modelling. For students who might be interested, please feel free to contact us. Nonetheless, keep in mind that the fieldwork takes place between July and August.

Research Interests

My main research interests are the evolution of cognition in small brains and the taxonomy of SE-Asian Odonata.
I am especially interested in:
-Neuroplasticity and neuromorphology in Jumping Spiders. How do small brains master cognitively demanding tasks? How do learning processes and different rearing environments influence the morphology of the brain?
-Morphology of the copulatory organs in Odonata and their implications for sexual selection.
-Systematics, distribution and phylogeny of Odonata, with a focus on SE-Asia.
