Two outstanding scientists to visit the Department of LL&M at the University of Rostock in spring 2025

Dr Calin Marioara & Prof. Dr Mami Mihara-Narita

As part of the Mare Balticum Fellowship Programme at the University of Rostock, the Department of Life, Light & Matter (LL&M) will welcome two renowned international guests in spring 2025: Prof. Dr Mami Mihara-Narita (Nagoya Institute of Technology, Japan) and Dr Calin Marioara (SINTEF, Trondheim, Norway). Their visits strengthen scientific collaboration and promote the exchange of knowledge in materials research.

Research focus and exchange of expertise

Prof. Dr. Mihara-Narita is a recognised expert in the field of aluminium-zinc-magnesium alloys and will devote her two-month stay to the investigation of nano-structures in these materials. Her work builds on previous results in Japan and Rostock, where she will carry out innovative analyses at the LL&M Competence Centre °CALOR and the Centre for Electron Microscopy ELMI-MV.

Dr Calin Marioara, who will be in Rostock for a fortnight, will contribute his expertise in (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to analyse the micro- and nanostructures of aluminium alloys down to the atomic level together with Prof. Mihara-Narita. This transfer of knowledge will promote the use of STEM technologies at ELMI-MV in the long term.

Hybrid lecture series for young academics

To accompany the scientific exchange, both guest scientists are organising a hybrid lecture series that is particularly aimed at students and young scientists. Topics such as the development of aluminium alloys in Japan, thermomechanical treatments and the analysis of nanostructures will be examined from an interdisciplinary perspective. The lectures offer a comprehensive insight into the fundamentals and the latest advances in materials science and will be announced in good time on the homepage and in the LLM mailing list.

Strengthening international cooperation

The stays of Prof. Dr Mihara-Narita and Dr Marioara underline the strategic importance of the Mare Balticum Fellowship Programme for the University of Rostock. They not only promote international networking, but also the preparation for future third-party funded projects in cooperation with leading research institutions worldwide. The University of Rostock is looking forward to welcoming these two outstanding scientists and wishes all participants a successful and inspiring exchange.
