Exploring the quantum-classical interface
Quantum theory in its modern form will celebrate its hundredth anniversary this year and there are many reasons to celebrate its achievements.
It is regarded as the most precise theory of nature, and it has become the basis of a substantial part of modern technology. And yet, we are still faced with fundamental questions which have intrigued already the founders of quantum physics. What is the wave function and what is measurement. Why do we see superpositions in the microscopic world of electrons and atoms, but experience reality in our practical lives? Is there any practical boundary between them or do we have to adapt the laws we know?
At the University of Vienna we are exploring “Quantum Macroscopicity” along two new experimental lines, pushing the boundaries in matter-wave experiments to ever more massive quantum objects using massive clusters and nanoparticles and the boundaries to higher complexity using biological nanomaterials.
