Franko Greiner (Kiel): When Plasma Gets Dirty: From Dust in Plasma to Dusty Plasma

Physikalisches Kolloquium

The impact of single dust on a low-pressure argon plasma is neglectable. However, the introduction of substantial quantities of dust into the system leads to significant changes. Dust-induced electron depletion influences the charging of dust particles and transforms the plasma's overall behavior. Experiments involving single micrometer-sized particles ("dust in plasma" scenarios) coupled with high-precision diagnostics provide insight into fundamental phenomena. However, understanding real  "dusty plasma" systems—where ions and dust particles dominate plasma dynamics—requires study of dense clouds of nanometer-sized dust. Currently, there is a lack of both extensive experimental data and a comprehensive theoretical framework. The primary experimental challenge is that conventional diagnostics, such as electrostatic probes and laser absorption spectroscopy, are ineffective, necessitating the development of innovative diagnostic techniques. Simulations are similarly constrained, the substantial differences in timescales between electron and dust dynamics limit them to one dimension. The inclusion of particle growth in reactive plasmas further increases these challenges.
