The “Wossidlo-Teuchert online”

Festive event to mark the launch of the digital Mecklenburg dictionary

Dear colleagues and students,

The time has finally come: On Monday, April 7, the online version of the “Mecklenburgisches Wörterbuch”, the “Wossidlo-Teuchert”, will go online. The creation of this large scientific dictionary, the seventh and final volume of which was printed in 1992, spanned an entire century. It records in detail the vocabulary of the then still living Mecklenburg dialect and provides information on many areas of intangible cultural heritage such as customs and crafts, in particular the agricultural and maritime working world. In this way, it offers a unique insight into the culture and way of life of the people of Mecklenburg at that time.

Over the past two years, we, a team of colleagues from the universities of Rostock and Trier and the Rostock University Library, have been working on digitizing the Mecklenburg Dictionary and linking it with its sources and other dictionaries as part of the DFG project “Wossidlo-Teuchert online”. We would like to celebrate the successful completion of our work together with you. With a festive event in the auditorium of the University of Rostock, we would like to explain the development of the now freely accessible digital version of the Mecklenburg Dictionary, its new way of use and its innovative and diverse approaches. At the same time, we would like to give you a brief outlook on future fields of research in the digital dialect lexicography of Low German.
