Delegation Trip to the Baltic Partner Universities

The aim of the visit, which took place at the end of February, was to intensify existing research cooperation in the field of Baltic Sea research and to foster the exchange of students, lecturers, and researchers. The delegation, consisting of members of the Rectorate, professors, and the Head of the International Office, discussed existing collaborations and opportunities to expand cooperation in the areas of OneHealth, peatland research, sustainability, and AI. Other key topics included the internationalisation of teacher education and European University Alliances.

“It was very important to the Rectorate to finally visit the universities in the Baltic States again in order to pick up the thread of conversation that had been abruptly cut off by the COVID-19 pandemic”, says Dorthe G. A. Hartmann. “This wish was strengthened by the Research Strategy adopted in 2024, which confirmed Baltic Sea Region research as one of the university's three research domains alongside One Health and Prevention. During the visits to the universities, we were able to learn about their strength in research and innovation as well as the internationalisation of teaching and learning. During the discussions, however, we also became very aware of how much the three states are influenced by the current geopolitical situation.”

Partnerships between the University of Greifswald and the Baltic universities – Tartu University (Estonia), Vilnius University (Lithuania), University of Latvia (Latvia) – have existed since the early 1990s based on university partnership agreements. Students at the University of Greifswald have the opportunity to spend semesters abroad at these partner universities within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme. There are also funding opportunities for academic and administrative staff through Erasmus+ and the DAAD Eastern Partnerships Programme
