Research interests

I am interested in arthropod development, morphology and diversity – and their study in a phylogenetic and evolutionary framework.

One major focus of my research lies on the arthropod nervous system. Currently, I am working on different aspects of neurogenesis, neural differentiation and neuroanatomy of the marine sea spiders (Pycnogonida). This enigmatic group of arthropods represents an early offshoot within Chelicerata (spiders, scorpions and their relatives), thus holding the potential to inform on ancestral features of the chelicerate nervous system and shed light on its anatomical transformations during early chelicerate evolution.

Further, I am investigating adult neurogenesis – i.e., the life-long production and integration of neural cells into the nervous system of mature animals – in non-insect arthropods. Apart from sea spiders, I am studying the neurogenic cell proliferation system in the brain of adult crayfish. Coupled to collaborative efforts on other chelicerate taxa and myriapods, this project seeks to evaluate similarities and differences of this understudied phenomenon across the major arthropod groups, assess the impact of adult neurogenesis on neural plasticity in Arthropoda and reconstruct lineage-dependent evolutionary changes.

Beyond nervous system-related projects, I am also engaged in (a) the study of other developmental processes in arthropods, such as external morphogenesis and muscle development, (b) the investigation of sea spider life-history features, which is to this day poorly understood for many species, as well as (c) pycnogonid taxonomy and phylogeny.
